STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— The York College softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday to the College of Staten Island, losing by scores of 8-1 and 16-1 respectively.
In game one, York pitcher Michelle DeLeon once again pitched well enough to win, allowing just three earned runs over six innings, but errors accounted for five more runs and the Cardinals could only give her one run of offensive support.
The Cardinals lone run came in the fifth inning when
Amanda Coll reached on a fielder's choice and
Evelyn Florentino came home to score.
The big inning for CSI came in the fourth, when the Dolphins plated five runs. With a run already in and two outs, a York error kept the inning alive. The Dolphins took advantage, following with four straight hits, two of which were triples.
CSI was led by Kaitlyn Flynn, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored and by Brittany Smith, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Danielle Ponsiglione tossed 6.2 innings, allowing just five hits to earn the win.
Game two was decided early, as CSI put up nine runs in the opening frame and six more in the second. Flynn and Smith were once again the big hitters. Smith was 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs and Flynn was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.
York was held to just two hits in game two. The Cardinals only run came on a CSI error, which brought home
Carmela Napolitano, who had singled earlier in the inning.
York drops to 5-11, 1-7 in the CUNYAC, while CSI improves to 5-9, 4-0 in CUNYAC play. The Cardinals will visit the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
