Fielding Woes and Lack of Hitting Result in Doubleheader Loss to Purchase

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
PURCHASE, N.Y— The York College softball team struggled offensively and gave away too many runs on defense, and as a result were swept by Purchase College in a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 5-1 and 11-2, respectively, on Thursday afternoon.

The Cardinals saw a good effort wasted by sophomore pitcher Michelle DeLeon in the opening game, as she tossed six innings and scattered hits, while allowing just two earned runs.  But four York errors accounted for three unearned runs.

Offensively, York only had five hits—all singles—and could muster just one run against Purchase hurler Lindsay Froman.  The Cardinals only run came in the second inning, when Aleen Abad singled home Carmela Napolitano.  After the second, the York bats were shut down, getting just two hits the rest of the way.

In game two, poor fielding turned what could have been a close game into a blowout.  York had nine miscues in the field, which resulted in five unearned runs.  Froman took the mound for
Purchase in game two as well, and once again held the Cardinals to just five hits.

Purchase plated four runs in both the first and fourth innings. The big knock of the game was a two-run triple by Ariel Perez.

The lone bright spot on offense for York was Joviette Frederick, who went a combined 4-for-5 in the doubleheader with a run scored.

The loss drops York's record to 5-9 on the season, while Purchase College improves to 6-12.  The Cardinals will visit the College of Staten Island on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
