Men’s Volleyball Ousted by Baruch in CUNYAC Semifinals
BOX SCORE
NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team was knocked out in the semifinals of the 2012 CUNY Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Championship Thursday night, losing to Baruch College 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18).
Just like in the previous meeting last week, the Cardinals came out looking strong as they took the first in decisive manner. Leading 7-5, York rolled off five straight points to take a commanding 12-5 cushion. York took the set and appeared to have the momentum going into the second set.
However, also like in the previous meeting, the Bearcats adjusted and took the next three sets convincingly to win the match. It was the fourth straight year Baruch has eliminated York in the semifinal round.
Bryan Williams led York with a match-high 16 kills (.206) and eight digs. Freshman sensation
Edner Geffrard was held to seven kills on the night, while setter
Glenn Vargas had 30 assists.
Baruch's Steven Coniglio had a team-high 14 kills and hit .545, while Christopher Kalmis slammed 13 kills and hit .400. Baruch improves to 22-14 on the season and moves on to the championship game against Hunter College at 8:00 pm.
Despite the loss, York's season may not be over. With a record of 19-14, York has a strong chance of qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship. The seeding for the ECAC Championship will be announced next week.
