BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

QUEENS, N.Y— Michelle DeLeon tossed a one-hitter in a 17-1, game-one rout and later broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the sixth inning of a 6-3 win in game two, as the York College softball team earned a pair of victories over the College of New Rochelle Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals evened up their 2012 record at 2-2 with the two victories in their home opener.

Game One Recap
York jumped all over New Rochelle pitcher Christine Biskup right from the start.  The Cardinals quickly loaded the bases to start the game and then sophomore Danielle Dunn smacked a two-run single to start the scoring.  After two strikeouts, York got an RBI-single from freshman Carmela Napolitano, a walk and then a two-run single by freshman Amanda Coll to put York up 6-0.  Two batters later, sophomore Krystina Rivera singled home two more runners give the Cardinals an 8-0 cushion after just one frame.

In the bottom of the second, York put up another eight-spot; this time scoring all eight runs with two outs. With two runners on and two-out, Coll got her second two-RBI single of the game to make it 10-0.  After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Rivera singled home two more runners.  She would eventually score by stealing home.  RBI singles by Dunn and freshman Kimberly Barnes, followed by a New Rochelle miscue in the field made the score 16-0 after just two innings of play.

Meanwhile, DeLeon shut down the New Rochelle bats, allowing just one-hit—and infield single which brought home CNR's only run of the game in the fourth inning.  She fanned nine of the 15 batters she faced to improve her mark to 1-1 on the year.

Coll finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs four RBIs, while Rivera was 3-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs.  Dunn went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs and Barnes was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Game Two Recap

Game two was a much tighter contest, as CNR pitcher Elizabeth Johnston was able to keep the York offense in check until late in the game.

York benefitted from some sloppy play by the Blue Angels in the field during the bottom of the second inning.  Three errors by CNR helped York plate three runs in the frame.  But the Blue Angels plated an unearned run in the fourth inning and then scratched across two more in the sixth to tie the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, York made two quick outs but then junior Joviette Frederick laced a triple to put the go-ahead run on.  DeLeon then followed with a clutch two-out, two-run homer to put York up 5-3.  Rivera followed with a walk and a stolen base and then Dunn singled her home to give the Cardinals an added insurance run.

Barnes then got a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to close out the game. Barnes tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits and one earned run, while striking out six batters.
Johnston pitched well for CNR in defeat, allowing three earned runs over six innings, while striking out ten batters.

The Cardinals will be idle until Friday, March 23, when they open up conference play with a doubleheader against Hunter College.  First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Randall's Island, Field #12.
