Late Rally Falls Short Against Medgar Evers

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, NY— A late rally and a potential game-tying shot as time expired fell short for York College Friday night, as the Cardinals were edged by Medgar Evers College 64-61.

Medgar Evers controlled the majority of the game, with the exception of the final minutes of both halves.  The Cougars held an eight-point advantage and dominated defensively in the first half but a 7-0 run late, helped York close to within one point (27-26) at halftime.

In the second half, Medgar Evers once again came out strong and continued to stifle York on offense.  A three-point play by the Cougars Brian Johnson gave Medgar Evers a 16-point advantage—its largest lead of the game—with 10 minutes to play.

But York slowly clawed back into the game.  Playing with just seven men, the Cougars started to feel the fatigue towards the end of the contest.  York was able to pressure Medgar Evers into some turnovers and some poor free throw shooting by the Cougars kept York in the game.

Trailing by six points (64-58) and just 13 ticks left on the clock, York's Michael Trowers was fouled shooting a three-pointer.  Trowers made all three free throws to keep hopes of a comeback alive.  York fouled Medgar on the next possession, giving the Cougars a chance to ice the game with just five seconds left.  Johnson missed the first shot and then a lane violation on the second shot gave York one final chance to tie the game.

York's Mark Evans dribbled the ball up court and managed to get a decent shot up despite only having five seconds to bring the ball up.  However the ball rattled around the rim and fell out, giving the Cougars the win.

Medgar Evers (15-9, 5-5 CUNYAC) was led by Winston Douglas who had a huge game, scoring 21 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and nabbing three steals.  Johnson finished with 19 points and Jovan Deare had 18 points and seven boards.

York (7-15, 3-5 CUNYAC) was led by Michael Edwards, who had 12 points, four assists and five rebounds.  Trowers added ten points off the bench.

York will host the College of Staten Island on Monday at 8:00 p.m.
