Vails’ 32 Points Not Enough as Men’s Hoops Falls to Mary Washington

BOX SCORE
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.— York College senior guard Tony Vails continued his torrid start to the season Saturday, netting a career-high 32 points, while shooting 58 percent from the field, but his effort would be wasted as the Cardinals lost to the University of Mary Washington by a score of 87-71 in the first game of the Roger Taylor Invitational held at North Carolina Wesleyan College.

York led through most of the first half, but saw Mary Washington rally to close the half with a six-point lead before taking that momentum into the second half.  A 13-5 run in the first five minutes gave Mary Washington a comfortable 14-point cushion.  They would lead by as much as 21 in the second half.

York was undone by poor free throw shooting, going 15-for-30 (50%) from the charity stripe. Conversely, Mary Washington was an impressive 23-for-27 (85%) from the free throw line.  They also shot well from the field, shooting 47 percent on the evening.

The Eagles were led by Bradley Reister, who finished with 25 points, including five three-pointers made. Jack Hamilton added 15 points and seven boards and Lamont Fields chipped in 14 points and ten rebounds.

For York, Shamir Wilkinson recorded a double-double, netting 13 points and ten boards, while blocking three shots.  DaShawn Bobbitt netted 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
