York Wins Conference Match over Medgar Evers but Falls to Rutgers-Newark

JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's volleyball team defeated conference-foe Medgar Evers College 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-21) but fell in a non-conference contest to Rutgers-Newark University in the nightcap in by a score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-11). 
 
Medgar Evers Recap
York trailed after the first two points of the opening set but followed with nine of the next 10 points to take a commanding 9-3 lead.  Medgar Evers rallied back to cut to within two points (14-12) only to see York score four straight and pull away once again.
 
The second set was closely-contested in the beginning, until a York run which saw the Cardinals score seven out of eight points, turned a narrow, 14-12, lead into a comfortable 21-13 cushion. 
 
York controlled the third set until late when Medgar Evers threatened to force a fourth set. York was just two points away from clinching the set (23-17) but four unanswered points by Medgar Evers made it 24-21.  But a kill by Sharon Fordyce put an end to the rally and clinched the victory for the Cardinals.
 
York was led by Fordyce, who recorded a match-high ten kills and four blocks.  NaaDira Patrick chipped in six kills and three aces, while Allison Li led all players with seven digs.
 
Medgar Evers (0-19, 0-6 CUNYAC) was led by Janiece Hill, who finished with six kills and five digs.  Kiwelew Mlimwengu added four kills and six digs. 
 
Rutgers-Newark Recap
York came out strong out of the gate, jumping out to a 17-14 lead in the opening set, following an ace by Pamela Yap.  Rutgers-Newark (13-10) battled back and eventually tied the match at 19-19.  York then struggled from there, committing three errors over the next four points to allow the Scarlet Raiders to take a 23-19 lead.  They would eventually close out the set with an ace from Stephanie Touzan. 
 
From there, the Scarlet Raiders really picked up their play and had little trouble with York in the final two sets. RNU's Paulina Walega helped lead the charge with a match-high ten kills and a .333 hitting percentage.  Jen Mendoza added 23 assists and Touzan led all players with ten digs, while also chipping in eight kills.
 
York was led by Patrick, who finished with seven kills.  Li once again led the led the Cardinals in digs with seven, while Jeannie Tran finished with six. 
 
York (7-25) will close out the regular season next Tuesday with a doubleheader.  The Cardinals will host the College of Staten Island at 6:00 p.m. and St. Joseph's Brooklyn at 8:00 p.m.
