BROOKLYN, N.Y.— Brooklyn's Tyshawn Russell, who earlier in the game scored the 1,000
th point of his career, went the length of the court to hit a game-winning lay-up with just one second remaining, lifting Brooklyn College to a 77-75 victory over the York College men's basketball team in a key CUNY Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday night.
York led for nearly the entire second half and held an advantage of ten points (65-55) with 9:05 to play but could not hold on for the victory. Brooklyn gradually cut into the deficit from there and made it a one-point game (71-70), following a lay-up by Amil John with 2:36 to play.
Despite the run, York quickly responded with a pair of made baskets to go back up by five-points (75-70) with just under a minute remaining.
Shamir Wilkinson took a pass from
Du'Quan Lawson to put York back up by three. Then after a stop on defense, York got another lay-up by
Omari Phipps to give the Cardinals a two-score advantage.
However, Brooklyn made a basket on its next possession and was fouled with a chance for a three-point play. Brooklyn missed the free throw and York came up with the rebound with 34 seconds left. With the shot clock turned off, Brooklyn was forced to foul, sending Lawson to the line with 25 seconds to go. Lawson missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Brooklyn a chance to tie the game.
Kavon Baker came through with 19 seconds left for Brooklyn, draining a three-pointer to tie the game at 75-75. York still had a chance to win the game with a final shot but
William Holley missed a jumper with seven seconds to go. Russell grabbed the rebound and went up court to hit the game-winning shot with one tick on the clock. With just one second left, York could not get off a final shot.
Baker led the way for the Bulldogs (8-2, 2-0 CUNYAC) with 20 points and seven boards. John added 19 points and seven boards and Russell added 18 points. His sixth point of the night put him at 1,000 for his career.
Wilkinson scored a season-high 24 points, while also grabbing 12 boards to lead York, who dropped to 4-10, 0-2 in the CUNYAC.
Tony Vails and Phipps each paced the Cardinals with 17 points. Phipps also pulled down 14 rebounds and dished out four assists.
York will visit Manhattanville College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
