Women’s Basketball Drops Non-Conference Game to USMMA

JAMAICA, NY—The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy had five players reach double figures in points as the Mariners went on to defeat the York College women's basketball team by a score of 66-54 in a non-conference contest Monday night.
USMMA's Rosenda Joseph led all scorers with 15 points and Rebecca Resor added 14 points and seven boards, while three other players netted ten or more points.
York was led by
Joanna Josama, who had 13 points, five assists and five steals. Shadea Green and
Shadae Rice each chipped in eight points.
The Mariners led from the opening tip, quickly jumping out to a seven-point lead following a lay-up by Resor just over four minutes into the game. USMMA extended its lead to as much as ten points in the first half but York was able to keep it close from there. The Cardinals closed to within four points (26-22) following a lay-up by
Danielle Dunn with 1:14 to play before halftime. However, the Mariners closed the half with five unanswered to go up by nine (31-22) at the half.
USMMA was able to build on that lead throughout the second half, as they kept the Cardinals from closing within single digits for nearly the entire half. The Mariners led by as much as 20 points in the second half until a late York run made the final score a 12-point margin.
The win improves USMMA's record to 6-10, while York falls to 1-15. The Cardinals will return to conference action on Wednesday when they visit Hunter College at 5:00 p.m.
