Men’s Basketball Wins Wild Contest over Lehman College

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's basketball team won a wild contest with conference-rival Lehman College on Friday evening by a score 74-70.

With the score tied at 70-70 with Lehman holding for a final shot, the Lightning's Phil Ductan had his shot blocked by York's Shamir Wilkinson.  Wilkinson was fouled after coming down with the rebound with just 0.5 seconds left in the game.  Lehman did not agree with the call and a pair of arguments by a Lehman player and its head coach resulted in a pair of technical fouls that gave Cardinals four free throws in addition to the original two.  York hit four of the six shots to seal the game.

However, prior to that it was Lehman who looked like they were going to come out on top.  The Cardinals had led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but Lehman rallied back over the final ten minutes and took their first lead of the second half when Ductan connected from long range with 1:08 to play, giving the Lightning a 70-68 advantage.

York took a long time to get a shot off on its next possession.  Kevin Lausell attempted a highly contested lay-up which was off the mark but Wilkinson was able to pull down the rebound.  He went right back up to put the shot in and tie the game at 72-72 with 35 ticks remaining.  The Lightning held for the final shot at that point which set up the drama at game's end.

The Cardinals were led by Tony Vails, who returned from a one-game absence due to injury, to score a team-high 20 points, while also handing out five assists.  Omari Phipps finished with 16 points and seven rebounds and Wilkinson recorded 15 points and nine boards.  William Holley chipped in 10 points and five boards despite being limited because of foul trouble throughout the game.

Lehman saw a big night from Mathias Raggiotto wasted as he scored a game-high 28 points, including four three pointers, while also pulling down seven boards.  Ductan added 13 points and Kevin Gil had 10 for Lehman.

The Lightning fell to 9-9, 5-2 in the CUNY Athletic Conference, while York improved to 7-11, 3-2 in CUNYAC play.  The Cardinals will visit Hunter College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
