Women’s Tennis Drops Conference Match to Hunter College

Hunter Wins Three Matches in Third-set Tiebreaker

JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's tennis team lost to a tough Hunter College team by a score of 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon.  The match was much closer than the score would indicate, as a number of matches went down to the wire with Hunter prevailing in all but one contest.

The Hawks swept doubles play but had to squeak out two victories.  The team of Flavia Guidi and Stephanie Ahwireng edged York's Nicole Jones and Amba Chanoine 8-6, while Elizabeth Serrana and Gina Yeo won 9-8 in a tiebreaker at third doubles.

After Hunter took first and second singles, Nina Olladikankwu found herself in another tight match in the fourth flight.  Once again, the Hawks earned the edge with Ahwireng defeating Olladikankwu in a third-set tiebreak by a score of 3-6, 6-2 (7-4).  Sixth singles also went to a third set tiebreak, with Hunter's Cardina Kaleda edging Anna Ko 3-6, 7-6, (7-5).  Chanoine dropped the first set but was ahead in the second set of her #3 singles match.  However the contest went unfinished because of darkness.

York's lone win came from fifth singles where Tenzin Kunchok defeated Olga Chagin 7-5, 6-0.

The Hawks improve to 1-0 with the win, while York drops to 1-2.  The Cardinals will visit Lehman College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
