Men’s Soccer Drops Conference Opener to CCNY

York Outshoots CCNY but Loses 3-1

BOX SCORE

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's soccer team lost its conference-opening match to the City College of New York by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon.  It was a rare loss for the Cardinals against CCNY. York had won the last six meetings (including playoffs) dating back to 2005.

CCNY got on the board early, striking in the 11th minute. Bertand Oubida scored the first of two goals on the day off a pass from teammate Brian Mbamelu.  20 minutes later, Mbamelu got into the goal column himself scoring off a rebound to make the score 2-0.

Just under a minute later, York struck back when Rachidi Amadou found Andre Adelson who headed the ball into the net to cut the deficit in half.

York had its chances to get the equalizer, as they outshot the Beavers by a 20-13 margin but could not take advantage.  CCNY then netted an insurance goal in the 62nd minute when Oubida benefited from a goalie miscue to make the score 3-1.  CCNY's Samuel Nkama headed the ball towards the York net and the keeper could not corral the shot, allowing it to go behind him.  Oubida picked up the loose ball and shot it into the open net.

With the win, CCNY improves to 2-4-1, while York drops to 0-6.  The road doesn't not get any easier for York as they will make a long trip to Buffalo on Friday to take on Medaille College, who advanced the round of 16 in last year's NCAA Championship.  The match begins at 7 p.m. on Friday.
