Medgar Evers’ Strong Second Half Puts York Away

BROOKLYN NY– After both teams played to a tie in the first half, Medgar Evers came out strong in the second half to defeat the York College men's basketball team 66-57 on Friday evening.
The Cougars shot well on the night (43.9%) and out-rebounded the Cardinals 41-36, which doesn't happen often. York has out-rebounded its opponents for the majority of its games, this season. Medgar Evers was led by Jovan Deare, who finished with 19 points and six boards. Robert Johnson added 15 points for the Cougars.
York's Marcel Esonwune led the team with 16 points and nine boards. Shamir Wilkinson had 15 points and seven rebounds and William Holley added 12 points.
The Cardinals looked like they were going to take control of the game when they went on a 9-2 run late in the first half to take a 28-21 advantage. A three-pointer by David Simon and a dunk by Esonwune highlighted the run. However Medgar Evers closed the half on a run over the final four minutes and evened the score at 33-33, following two Tony Sims free throws with 33 seconds left before halftime.
The Cougars carried that momentum over from the end of the first half and jumped out to a seven-point cushion (48-41) after a James Gilmore lay-up with 12:25 to play. Medgar Evers held on to the lead the rest of the way, not allowing York to get closer than five points for the remainder of the contest.
With the win the Cougars improves to 11-10, 9-2 in the CUNYAC, while York falls to 6-15, 4-5 in the CUNYAC.
