Mariners Sink York in Women’s Basketball

KINGS POINT, NY— The United States Merchant Marine Academy jumped all over the York College women's basketball team from the onset and went on to defeat the Lady Cardinals by a score of 79-53 in a non-conference game Monday evening.
It was all USMMA from the start as the Mariners jumped out to a 33-8 cushion, after scoring 14 unanswered points in under four minutes to put the game well out of reach. The Mariners lead ballooned to 31 points (49-18) as Nicole Barriga hit a buzzer-beater to end the first half. Kings Point extended its lead to as much as 36 points in the second half, until York closed to within 26 points to end the game.
Kings Points was led by Rebecca Grimes who finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Olivia Norris added 12 points and Janay Weathers and Alicen Heinrich each had ten. The Lady Cardinals got a team-high 13 points from Letanya Grady. Joanna Josama added seven points and 11 rebounds and Maimouna Dabo scored eight points and collected six boards.
The loss drops York's record to 7-12, while Kings Points improves to 6-13. York will take on City Tech on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
