NJCU Jumps Out Early to Put Away the Cardinals
Box Score
JERSEY CITY, NJ— New Jersey City University jumped out to a huge early advantage and never looked back as the Gothic Knights defeated the York College men's basketball team by a score of 70-47 in a non-conference contest Monday evening.
NJCU (10-8) jumped out to a 30-5 cushion at the 7:31 mark of the first half, an advantage which was much too great for the Cardinals to overcome. Turnovers were once again a problem for York, as the Gothic Knights were +13 in turnover margin and converted turnovers into 24 points, while York only had one point off turnovers. NJCU was able to get off 24 more field goal attempts due to the large turnover margin.
The score was only 11-5 after two Marcel Esonwune free throws six minutes into the game, but things took a turn for the worse from there. The Gothic Knights scored 19 unanswered points to put the game out of reach early.
The Gothic Knights saw three players reach double figures, led by Walik Albright, who finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Da'Shon Barrino added 12 points and Ashmere Wilson scored 11 points and pulled down five boards off the bench.
York (5-14) once again got a double-double from Esonwune—his 18th of the season—as he scored 20 points, collected ten rebounds and blocked two shots. The senior All-American also had one of his better days at the charity stripe, making 8 of 10 free throws. Junior Kevin Lausell paced York with 11 points.
York will host City Tech on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
