Men’s Basketball Goes Cold in Second Half, Falls to Rutgers-Newark 72-58

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's basketball team held an eight-point lead late in the first half but Rutgers-Newark University rallied to tie the score at halftime and then took control in the second half, as they went on to defeat the Cardinals 72-58 in a non-conference contest Wednesday night.

York looked strong early on, jumping out to a 29-21 advantage with 7:23 before halftime, after going on a 13-1 run which turned a five-point disadvantage into an eight-point lead.  Tony Vails had four points during the run and Mark Evans and Michael Trowers each chipped in three-pointers.

However, from that point on, it was all Rutgers-Newark as they closed the gap slowly and eventually tied the game with seconds before halftime on a three-pointer by the Scarlet Raiders Greg Moore.

The game continued to be tight for the first part of the second half but Rutgers-Newark took control of the game with about eight minutes remaining.  Leading by five points, RNU's Christian Garcia drained a jumper to go up 52-45. Following a pair of missed free throws by York on its next possession, the Cardinals picked up a foul and then a technical foul right after, giving the Scarlet Raiders four free throws.  Moore drained all four to put RNU up by 11 points (56-45) with 7:26 to play.

The Scarlet Raiders turned it on from there and only briefly allowed the Cardinals to get back within single digits.  They would extend their lead to as much as 15 points in the final minutes.  York was held to just 26 points in the second half on 36 percent shooting.

The Cardinals were led by Vails who drained 21 points, grabbed five boards and handed out four assists.  Evans finished with 14 points, while Shamir Wilkinson recorded 13 points and seven boards.  York dropped to 1-7 with the loss.

Moore had a game-high 25 points, while Jeremiah Rivers and Garcia each had 13 points, as the Scarlet Raiders improved to 6-2.

The Cardinals will visit Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday at 8:00 pm
