JAMAICA, N.Y.—St. Joseph's College rallied in the second half, overcoming a 13-point second-half deficit and defeated the York College women's basketball team 80-75 in a non-conference affair Saturday afternoon.
York was clicking on all cylinders in the first half of play. The Cardinals were shooting lights-out in the first half, shooting 56 percent from the field and 66 percent from three-point range.
Joanna Josama had a huge first half for York, scoring 21 points on 8-11 shooting, while
Shadae Rice was also on fire, netting 15 points on 7-9 shooting. They took an eight-point advantage (52-44) going into the locker room.
Things continued to go well for York in the early part of the second half as the lead was extended to 13 points following a pair of made free throws by Rice with 16:55 left in the game. Shortly after, however, York's shooting went cold and St. Joseph's slowly crept back into the game.
The Lady Bears went on a 14-3 run over the course of five minutes to tie the game at 64-64 following a lay-up by Janine Doran. Doran and Teresa Mangan were key players in the run, combining to score 10 of the 14 points.
The score was still tied with just under three minutes to play when St. Joseph's took control of the game. A lay-up by Doran at the 2:40 mark, a defensive stop and then a jumper by Mangan put the Lady Bears up four points (76-72). Doran than swiped the ball on York's next possession, setting up an easy bucket by Kristen Binckes to give St. Joseph's a six-point cushion.
Shadae Rice drained a three on the next possession to cut the lead in half but could not get any closer as they turned the ball over two more times in the final minutes.
The Lady Bears really stepped up their defense in the second half, holding York to just 22 percent shooting and keeping Josama at bay, allowing her to score just one point after a big first half.
Rice finished with 28 points and nine rebounds for York, while Josama scored 22 points and added seven rebounds.
Stayce Kay Muirhead was a force on the glass, grabbing 16 rebounds, while also adding 10 points.
St. Joseph's was led by Ashley McQuillan, who had 17 points and by Mangan who finished with 13 points.
The Lady Bears improve to 1-5, while York drops to 0-6. The Cardinals will host Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
