STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— In a game that went back-and-forth till the very end, the College of Staten Island was able to hold off York in the final minutes and win a tightly contested game, defeating the Cardinals by a score of 65-60 in the CUNY Athletic Conference opener on Thursday evening.

The game was tight throughout the first half. The biggest lead by either team was six points, which was held by the College of Staten Island following a lay-up by T.J. Tibbs (20-14) with 6:14 to play.  That lead was short-lived as York followed with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 22-22 after a three-pointer by Mark Evans.  It was more back-and-forth play for the remainder of the opening half.  CSI closed with a lay-up by Bloochy Magliore to go up 32-30 going into the locker room.

Early in the second half, York looked to possibly grab some momentum after a 10-0 run turned a four-point deficit into a six-point advantage (44-38) with 13:47 left to play.  Omari Phipps opened and closed the run with a pair of lay-ups and Evans netted five points to lead the Cardinals during the stretch.

Still leading by six points about two minutes later, York saw its deficit cut in half after a three-pointer by CSI's Louis Valdes.  A made free throw on CSI's next possession and then a defensive stop and another made bucket then tied the game at 46-46 with 10:51 to play.

The two teams continued to trade buckets until about three minutes left, when CSI grabbed the lead for good.  Leading by one point (57-56) with 3:05 to play, the Dolphins forced a York miss then were fouled on the following possession.  Tibbs drained both free throws to go up by three points and then the Dolphins forced a turnover to get the ball back.  Magliore made a jumper on the Dolphin's next possession to take a five-point lead (61-56) with 1:50 to play.  York could not convert buckets in the final minutes and CSI made enough free throws down the stretch to hold onto the lead.

York was led by Evans who finished with 20 points and Tony Vails who finished with 14 points.  Phillipe Gregoire had seven points and eight rebounds and Omari Phipps registered six points and seven boards.  The Cardinals drop to 1-5, 0-1 in the CUNYAC with the loss.

CSI was led by Tibbs, who finished with 18 points and by Jordan Young who scored 15.  The Dolphins improved to 3-2, 1-0 in the CUNYAC with the victory.

York will host New Jersey City University on Monday at 8:00 p.m.
