Men’s Soccer Stunned by Baruch in CUNYAC Semifinals

Bearcats Net Five Goals in Rout

BOX SCORE

BROOKLYN, NY— The York College men's soccer team, the #2 seed in the CUNYAC/ Applebee's Men's Soccer Championship, were upset by the third-seed, Baruch College, who dominated the contest, winning by a score of 5-0 at the Aviator Sports Complex Wednesday evening.

It was a surprising result, considering the Cardinals defeated the Bearcats convincingly by a 3-0 score in a regular season contest earlier this season.  However, it was all Baruch tonight, as the Bearcats controlled the match from the onset.  The Cardinals returned to the site where they won the 2007 CUNYAC title and were hoping the result would be the same this year, but it was not the Cardinal's night.

Baruch struck first in the 15th minute, when Kyle Keague took a pass from Akil George and took a shot from the far right corner and put the ball in back left corner.  Later, in the 28th minute, George added a goal of his own when a throw-in near Baruch's goal was deflected towards George, who rifled a shot into the net for a 2-0 advantage.  The score remained the same until halftime.

Baruch put the game away early in the second half, when Jean Zambrano lofted a shot from the far-right corner and into the net to make it 3-0.  The Bearcats continued to pour it on, adding two more goals in the second half to round out the scoring.

Meanwhile, York struggled to get anything going offensively.  York took 16 shots on the day and only six were on goal.  Just two of the six required a strong effort from the Baruch goalie to turn away.

Baruch, now 8-8-1 on the season, will take on Lehman College—who defeated Hunter 2-0 in the other semifinal— in the championship game on Saturday at Randall's Island.  York closes the 2011 season with a record of 7-12.
