Men’s Basketball Falls to Christopher Newport

FREDRICKSBURG, V.A.— The York College men's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport, 65-56, Saturday afternoon in the final game of the University of Mary Washington Tip-Off Classic. 
 
Christopher Newport led from start to finish as they improved to 2-1 on the season.  The Cardinals dropped to 0-3 with the loss.  Despite the defeat, York had three players finish in double figures on the day.  Junior guard Tony Vails scored a game-high 20 points, junior center Shamir Wilkinson finished with 15 points and six rebounds and junior guard Mark Evans paced the Cardinals with 13 points and nine boards.  Christopher Newport also had three players in double figures, led by Conley Taylor with 17 points and seven rebounds. 
 
The game was close throughout most of the first half, with Christopher Newport holding a slight advantage until a 9-1 run turned an 18-13 game to a 27-14 advantage for CNU.  Christopher Newport went into the locker room up by 11 points (30-19).
 
Christopher Newport held a comfortable lead for most of the first half except for a brief period in which York closed the deficit to four points (45-41) following a Tony Vails lay-up with 11:01 to play.  York stayed within two scores for the next four minutes but Christopher Newport eventually extended its lead back to double digits after a foul and a technical foul by York gave CNU four straight free throws.  They netted all four shots to go up by ten points (55-45) with 7:43 to play.  The Cardinals did not threaten the rest of the way. 
 
York is idle until November 27 when they visit Albertus Magnus College at 1:00 p.m.
