Furious Rally Falls Short for Men’s Basketball Against Newport News Apprentice School

York Nearly Overcomes 25-point Deficit

FREDRICKSBURG, V.A.— Newport News Apprentice School outscored the York College men's basketball team 34-15 in the first half of play and then held off a second-half run as the Cardinals fell 55-42 in the first game of the Mary Washington University Tip-off Classic on Friday afternoon.
 
Things started off rough for the Cardinals as they trailed by as many as 25 points in the first half of play.  Trailing 10-5, at the 11:30 mark of the first half, the Apprentice School went on a huge run, outscoring the Cardinals 21-1 over the next six minutes of play. 
 
It looked like York would get blown out of the building at that point, but the Cardinals slowly battled back in the second half.  Trailing 36-17 with 16:32 left to play in the game, York went on a big run of its own, erasing the huge deficit they faced to take a one point lead (38-37) with 7:16 to play in the game.  Mark Evans was instrumental during the run, draining three buckets from beyond the arc.  Shamir Wilkinson and Tony Vails also netted four points apiece during the 21-1 run. 
 
Shortly after a Wilkinson jumper which gave York the lead, Newport News retook the advantage on a jumper by Isaih Harrison with 7:16 to play (38-37).  Newport News then rebounded to go on a n 8-2 run which made the score 46-39 with 2:43 to play.  They would hold on from there, not letting the Cardinals get closer than six points in the final minutes of play. 
 
York was led by Omarii Phipps, who finished with a game-high 14 points and ten rebounds.  Evans added nine points, while Vails finished with eight.  The Apprentice School was led by Harrison who finished with 13 points and ten rebounds.
 
York (0-2) will face Christopher Newport on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
