NYU Pulls Ahead in Second Half to Top York in Season Opener

JAMAICA, NY—New York University outscored the York College women's basketball team 33-18 in the second half to pull away and win by a score of 72-49 in the 2011-12 season opener Tuesday evening.
 
York started off strong, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage, thanks to a three-pointer and a jumper by Joanna Josama.  Following the bucket, NYU went on a 10-2 run to take a 10-7 lead after a three-point play by Cara Bonito.   NYU moved ahead by nine points (19-10) after a three by Melissa Peng. 
 
It appeared as NYU would pull away early but the Cardinals clawed their way back.  Another three by Josama and a free throw by Shadae Rice brought York to within three points (33-30) with 4:24 to play in the first half.  However, NYU closed the half strong and went into the locker room up by eight points.
 
The second half was all NYU from the start.  York was held to just 18 percent shooting in the second half, while the Violets shot 44 percent.  After shooting 5-12 in the first half from beyond the arc, York was 0-11 in the second half.   NYU also held a 50-35 edge in the rebounding department.   

A quick bucket to start the second half by NYU put the VIolets up by ten points.  York never got within single digits for the remainder of the game.  The Violets continued to extend their lead in the second half, going up by as many as 24 points.  
 
NYU was led by Bonito who scored a game-high 15 points.  Tana Bertino added 14 points and Bianca Storts netted eight points.  The Cardinals were led by Rice, who finished with 13 points, five boards and two assists.  Josama added 12 points and Lateefah Salters chipped in with nine points.  Danielle Dunn grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
