Women’s Tennis Loses Hard-Fought Match to CSI, 6-3

STATEN ISLAND, NY— In what was an important conference match for seeding purposes, the York College women's tennis team lost a closely contested match to the College of Staten Island by a score of 6-3 Saturday afternoon.
 
The two teams came in with identical conference records of 4-1 and tied for third place in the CUNY Athletic Conference standings.  Both teams fought for every point and it showed, as the match took 4:45 to complete. 
 
York came out strong in doubles play, winning two of three matches.  Nicole Jones and Amba Chanoine were 8-4 winners at #1 doubles and Anna Ko and Tenzin Kunchok held on a for an 8-6 win at third doubles. 
 
However, things turned in singles play as the Dolphins took five of six matches to take the contest.  York's lone winner in singles play was who Kunchok won in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.  York had two matches that were extremely close which proved to be the difference in the contest.  Chanoine lost a heartbreaker to CSI's Sophia Varriano 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), while Ko also lost a tough match by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 to the Dolphins' Jean Baak. 
 
York (7-6, 4-2 CUNYAC) will have another tough match on Monday, as they take on Brooklyn College in a completion of a suspended contest from last week.  Brooklyn currently is undefeated in CUNYAC play and is in first place.
