Lehman Rallies Late to Defeat York in Overtime
BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's soccer team held a 1-0 lead for most of the contest, but could not hold on as Lehman College scored a late goal on a penalty kick and then got the golden goal in the second overtime to defeat the Cardinals 2-1 in a key conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.
York struck first in the 26
th minute when
Menard Millus set up
Rachidi Amadou, who rifled a low-lying shot past the Lehman keeper to give the Cardinals a 1-0 cushion.
The score remained the same for most of the game, as both teams were evenly matched. However, Lehman caught a break late in the game when a handball in York's goalie box gave the Lightning a penalty kick with just 3:26 left to play. Momar Thiam converted the penalty kick to send the match into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, Lehman got the golden goal just a few minutes into the second extra session. Thiam kicked the ball from midfield towards the York goal. York keeper Quddus Kassim came out of net to kick the ball out of harms way, but Lehman's Oumar Niang beat him to it and put the ball in net for an easy goal.
The loss was especially tough for the Cardinals, as it would have put them in first place. Instead, Lehman holds on to first place and separates themselves from the Cardinals, who came into the match three points back. Lehman improves to 7-4, 5-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference, while York drops to 3-11, 3-3 in the CUNYAC.
York will look to rebound from the defeat on Saturday, when they host Baruch College at 12:00 p.m.
