York Soccer Coach Kafui Kouakou Named Chairperson of CUNY University Student Senate
JAMAICA, NY— York College head women's soccer coach and assistant men's soccer coach
Kafui Kouakou has earned the prestigious honor of being named the chairperson of the City University of New York's University Student Senate.
The University Student Senate (USS) is the official governance organization charged with representing the interests of the students of the City University of New York. Through USS, the students have representation at all standing committees of the CUNY Board of Trustees, the university's policy-making body. These committees deal with all major university policy-making decisions, including the university's budget. USS also advocates on behalf of students before elected officials at the city, state and federal levels.
As the commissioner of this organization, Kouakou, who is now a graduate student at Brooklyn College and was a 2008 graduate of York College, will have a vote with the board of trustees on all important CUNY matters. Kouakou had been a delegate for the USS while being a student at York and decided to run for chairperson as a graduate student.
“We will be lobbying in Albany for the interests of all CUNY students,” said Kouakou. “I'm hoping we can stop tuition increases and make more scholarships available for students.”
Kouakou will certainly have his hands full this school year, as he will be juggling coaching two teams, going to graduate school, teaching math courses at York as an adjunct lecturer and now serving as the Chairperson of the USS.
“Fortunately, my term doesn't start until November 1
st and soccer season is almost over by then. The timing works out.” added Kouakou.
In the meantime, Kouakou is leading the Cardinals men's soccer team to another deep playoff run. York will face Baruch College in the semifinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championships on Saturday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the College of Staten Island.
