JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's tennis team won a long and hard-fought match against Baruch College in the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC/ Hospital for Special Surgery Women's Tennis Championships Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals needed 4:10 and two sets of courts to complete the match, but in the end York came out on top 5-3.
The match started at 3:30 p.m. but by 6:30, two matches still were not completed. Because York does not have lights on its tennis courts, the match moved down the road to a local park. After another hour of play, York finally clinched the match.
The Cardinals will now take on Hunter College in the semifinals tomorrow at the Billie Jean King U.S. National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY beginning at 4:00 p.m. Admission to the event is free.
The two teams started off by trading #1 and #2 doubles. Baruch cruised to an 8-1 win at # 1 doubles, while York's
Amba Chanoine and
Nicole Jones breezed through #2 doubles by a score of 8-1. Third doubles was a much different story however. In a match that took nearly two hours to complete, and which was still going on when #1 singles was complete, the Cardinals squad of
Tenzin Kunchok and
Anna Ko edged out Anna Komar and Marianna Kogan by a 9-8 (7-2) score. York rallied from a 7-5 deficit to get the win.
In singles play, York got points from Jones, who won 6-3, 6-2 at #2 singles and Chanoine, who was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at #4 singles. Baruch took #1 and #3 singles to make the score 4-3.
Ko and Kunchok once again were the final two people playing when the match needed to be moved to another court. It was there that Kunchok won 6-4, 7-5 to clinch the victory.
With the win, York now stands at 9-7 on the year. The Cardinals fell to Hunter College earlier this season by a score of 7-2.
