York Rallies Late to Top Baruch

Box Score

NEW YORK, NY– The York College men's basketball team overcame a 10-point deficit with just over six minutes to play and defeated Baruch College 66-63 in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest Friday evening.

York's Marcel Esonwune, the nation's leading rebounder, registered another double-double (his 16th of the season), scoring 20 points, grabbing ten rebounds and blocking five shots and Shamir Wilkinson scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead York.  William Holley added 12 points, eight boards and five assists, including a key basket in the final minute that propelled the Cardinals to victory.

A struggling Cardinals squad looked like they were on their way to another discouraging loss, when Chris Beauchamp made a lay-up that gave Baruch a ten-point cushion—it's largest lead of the game—with 6:22 to play in the contest.

York rallied from there, scoring nine unanswered to make the score 57-56 with 2:52 remaining.  Lay-ups by Phillipe Gregoire and David Simon and five made free throws helped cut into the lead.

After Baruch made a basket to go back up three points, York's Kevin Lausell came down court and drained a shot from beyond the arc to even the score at 59-59 with just under two minutes remaining.  Following the three-pointer, the two teams exchanged points on their next two possessions and the score remained even (63-63) with 28 seconds remaining.

On York's next possession, Holley was able to make a lay-up and put the Cardinals up by two (65-63) with just 21 seconds left.  The Bearcats were left with a chance to tie the game but Lionel Hilaire, who scored a game-high 26 points, missed a lay-up and Esonwune grabbed the rebound.  Kevin Lausell was fouled and made the first free throw to put York up three points with five seconds left.   Lausell missed the second but Wilkinson grabbed the offensive rebound and Baruch fouled again.  Wilkinson missed both shots and Baruch got the rebound but there was not enough time left to get off a potential game-tying shot.

The win improves York's record to 5-13, 3-4 in the CUNYAC, while Baruch drops to 11-9, 5-3 in the CUNYAC.  The Cardinals will visit New Jersey City University on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
