Second Half Run by NJCU Puts Women’s Basketball Away

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, NJ— A strong second half by New Jersey City University turned a close game into a blowout as the Gothic Knights defeated the York College women's basketball team 72-54 on Monday evening.

York held a brief, 11-7, lead in the early going following a made free throw by Maimouna Dabo with 13:56 to play in the first half.   That would be the last time the Lady Cardinals saw a lead as NJCU scored the next ten points to go up 17-11 with 11:07 to play.  York stayed within striking distance though, and trailed by seven points (29-22) following a Danielle Dunn lay-up just before halftime.

Things got out of hand for York in the second half though.  A 14-3 run over a three minute stretch turned a 12-point NJCU advantage to a 23-point cushion (53-30).  The lead would be too much for the Lady Cardinals to overcome as they could only get within 15 points the rest of the way.

NJCU saw four of its players reach double-figures, led by Maria Suarez who recorded a team-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Gabrielle Rivera added 16 points for the Gothic Knights.

The Lady Cardinals were led by Dabo who finished with a game-high 23 points.  Shadae Rice and Shayna Smith each chipped in with nine points apiece.

The loss drops York's record to 7-10, while NJCU improves to 4-14.  York will look to get back on track this Wednesday when they host Hunter College at 6:00 p.m. The game will be aired on tape delay on Queens Public Television.  Admission is free and live stats, as always, are available if you can't make it out the game.
