Stockton Pulls Away from the Lady Cardinals in Second Half; Defeats York 69-49

AMHERST, MA – After going into halftime tied, Richard Stockton outscored the York College women's basketball team by 20 points in the second half and defeated the Lady Cardinals by a score of 69-49 in the opening round of the 2010 Amherst Classic.

After seven minutes of first half action, a three pointer by York's Shadae Rice tied the game 8-8. Richard Stockton responded with a 7-2 scoring run, taking a 15-10 lead on a layup by Aliyah Nelson. The Ospreys stretched their lead to 18-10 as LaTonya Oliver made 1-of-2 free throws, but followed up her miss with a put-back score.

York came storming back heading into the break, with Niya Jarvis and Elizabeth Padilla combining to score 11 straight points. The flurry put the Cardinals up 27-23 with just over a minute remaining before half. Richard Stockton scored the final four points of the half on free throws to send the two teams into the break tied 27-27.

Richard Stockton opened the second half on a 15-6 run, taking a 42-33 lead on a three-pointer at the 13:16 mark. The Ospreys stretched their lead to 48-37 when Nelson beat the shot clock with a three from the left wing. The buzzer beater came with 9:25 remaining in the second half.

Down the stretch Richard Stockton blew the game wide open, with Julia Fagan and LaTonya Oliver working the offensive glass for easy second-chance scores. The Ospreys finished the game off with a Fagan put-back to close out the win 69-49.

Oliver scored a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds for the Ospreys, while Fagan, Che'Na Thompson and Lauren Alwan each scored 10 points. Fagan pulled down 14 rebounds in the win. Rice led the Cardinals with 16 points, eight boards and four assists in the loss, while Padilla added 14 points.

York (4-3) will now take on Emerson College in the consolation game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.  Stockton will face Amherst in the championship game at 4:00 p.m.
