Turnovers Plague York in Loss to Staten Island

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's basketball team struggled to hold on to the ball and the College of Staten Island took advantage, as the Dolphins went on to defeat the Cardinals 76-51 in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest Thursday evening.

York committed 34 turnovers, while CSI gave the ball up just nine times, which was a turnover differential that would prove to be too large to overcome.  In addition, CSI turned those turnovers into 39 points. York shot 53 percent to CSI's 42 percent and out-rebounded CSI 36-27, but the Dolphins were able to take 29 more shots because of the miscues.

Jordan Young led CSI with 21 points and Dale Taranto added 13 points for the Dolphins.  York was led by Marcel Esonwune, who finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while also blocking five shots.  Shamir Wilkinson added ten points and seven rebounds and David Simon finished with nine points and five caroms.

York only trailed by three points, 22-19, with 8:12 to go in the first half but they closed the half poorly, as CSI outscored them 16-3 for the rest of the half.  Seven turnovers in the final two minutes of the half allowed the Dolphins to take a commanding 15-point lead into the locker room.

CSI continued to extend its lead in the second half as York could only get as close as 11 points the rest of the way.

With the loss, York drops to 2-6, 1-1 in the CUNYAC.  Staten Island improves to 5-0, 1-0 in the CUNYAC. York will look to rebound from the loss on Tuesday when they host William Paterson at 6:00 p.m. Admission to the game is free.
