Box Score

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark erupted for 49 second-half points in a 72-36 win over the York College women's basketball team in a non-conference contest Friday evening.

Rutgers senior Jaleesa Coleman netted 11 of her game-high 17 points in the opening half as the Raiders took a 26-17 lead going into the locker room.  York managed to stay within striking distance in the first half, despite playing without two of its starters.  Strong defense by York limited the Scarlet Raiders to just 25 percent shooting in the opening stanza.

However, the second half was a much different story. The Raiders methodically pulled away in the second half with Coleman, Jasmine Daniels, Courtney Woodard and Emily Atunrase netting six points each in the balanced assault.

Daniels finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double while sophomore guard Kristen Venning tallied 13 rebounds, six points and a game-high five assists.

York was paced by senior forward Shayna Smith with a dozen points, eight rebounds and four steals, while sophomore guard Joanna Josama hauled down a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with four points and three steals.

Cardinal sophomore guard Shadae Rice added seven points, four assists and five rebounds.  Senior guard Elizabeth Padilla scored nine points.

The loss drops York to 4-6, while Rutgers-Newark improves to 8-1. York is at SUNY-Old Westbury on December 18 for their final game before Christmas break.
