York Edges Brooklyn, 5-4, to Advance to CUNYAC Semifinals

JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's tennis team—in just its second year of existence— advanced to its first ever CUNYAC Semifinal after defeating Brooklyn College 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships Tuesday afternoon.
With the match squared at 4-4, it came down to third singles, where York's Amba Chanoine battled Brooklyn's Diana Rafailova. Chanoine came out on top, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
Brooklyn got off to an early lead, taking two of the three doubles matches. York's Anna Ko and Tenzin Kunchok picked up the win at third singles to improve to 7-0 against conference opponents this season.
In singles play, Ko and Irma Ruilova put York back up, winning their fifth and sixth singles matches respectively. Brooklyn's Maria Sanz earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles and Gianna Gelosi won 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 at fourth singles to round out Brooklyn's scoring. York's Nicole Jones won 6-3, 6-2 at second singles to even the score up at 4-4.
The Lady Cardinals will now face Baruch College, who upset Staten Island in its quarterfinal match, on Friday at the USTA national tennis center at 4:00 p.m.
