BROOKLYN, NY – After a tightly contested first half, the York College women's basketball opened the second half on a 10-2 run and pulled away from Medgar Evers to earn a 66-51 win in a CUNY Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday evening.
York sophomore Kadisha Wickham once again flirted with a triple-double, netting 18 points, grabbing 17 boards and adding seven steals. She had company as junior Niya Jarvis, also came close to a triple-double, scoring nine points, grabbing nine rebounds and swiping an incredible 11 steals.
The Lady Cardinals found themselves in a close game, taking just a three point lead (32-29) into the locker room. Medgar Evers started the second half with a bucket from Shakimba Pierre but York took off from there. Jarvis and Chiquita Greene each converted lay-ups on the next two possessions. A few minutes later, April Jones converted a three-pointer and Maimouna Dabo netted a jump shot to put York up 42-31. York never looked back from that point on. The Cougars could only get as close as nine points the rest of the way.
The key to the game was the turnover differential. York forced 43 turnovers, while only committing 18. The Lady Cardinals converted the turnovers into 46 points.
Despite the loss, Tiffany Thompson put together quite an effort for Medgar Evers, netting 16 points, grabbing a game-high 21 rebounds and blocking seven shots. Pierre paced the Cougars with ten points and seven rebounds. Dabo and Padilla added nine points apiece for York.
With the win, York evens its record up at 6-6, 1-1 in the CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers falls to 5-6, 1-2 in the CUNYAC. The Lady Cardinals will return to action this Saturday when they visit the College of Staten Island at 1:00 p.m.
