York Tops Medgar Evers Thanks to Strong Defensive Play

Cardinals Hold Medgar Evers to 25 percent shooting

BROOKLYN, NY – The York College men's basketball team overcame a poor shooting night, thanks to some strong defensive play and defeated Medgar Evers College 62-52 in a CUNY Athletic Conference affair Wednesday night. 

 

York shot poorly all night, shooting only 36 percent from the field, five percent from three-point range and 45 percent from the charity stripe.  However, the Cardinals defense stepped up, holding the Cougars to 25 percent shooting on the night.

 

The Cardinals got strong efforts on both sides of the ball from big-men Marcel Esonwune and Shamir Wilkinson.  Esonwune finished with ten points, 14 boards and two blocks, while Wilkinson put together the best game of his young career, setting new career high in points (16), rebounds (11) and blocks (3).  Junior Rodney Bennett, who was playing in his first game of the season, added 12 points and five boards. 

 

The game was evenly matched until mid-way though the second half, when the Cardinals began to pull away.  York held a 42-37 lead, when they opened up an 8-0 run to take a 50-37 advantage with 13:26 to play. Wilkinson netted four points during the run.  The Cardinals cruised the rest of the way, extending their lead to as many as 16 points.

 

Medgar Evers was paced by Kallai Sharpe and Shawn Bassarath who each netted ten points. The Cougars fall to 7-7, 1-2 in the CUNYAC with the loss.  York has now won four straight games and stands at 8-5, 2-0 in the CUNYAC.

 

The Cardinals will visit the College of Staten Island on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
