York Tops John Jay 62-47 at Catholic University Tournament; Wickham Narrowly Misses Triple Double
Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Sophomore Kadisha Wickham had arguably the best game of her young career, narrowly missing a triple-double, to lead the York College women's basketball team to a 62-47 victory over John Jay College in the consolation game of the Catholic University Tournament Monday afternoon.
Wickham recorded 22 points, grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds and added eight steals in the victory. The 20 rebounds were eight more than her previous career high. Junior Elizabeth Padilla also had a strong game for York, scoring 17 points. John Jay's Jessica Lirio led the Bloodhounds with 12 points and eight boards and Zadoora Carson added 11 points and 17 rebounds.
The majority of the game was controlled by York. The game was tightly contest for the opening ten minutes of the first half. Leading by 5 points at the 10:42 mark, the Lady Cardinals scored seven unanswered to go up by 12 (27-15) with 9:18 to go. Wickham netted 17 of her 22 points in the first half, propelling the Cardinals to an eight-point lead at halftime (33-25). In the second half, the Bloodhounds briefly closed to within six points, only to see the Cardinals regroup and pull away down the stretch.
The contest was a sloppy one on both sides as the teams combined for 85 turnovers and 55 fouls in the game. The Lady Cardinals failed to take advantage of the numerous free throw attempts, shooting just 38 percent (12-31) from the charity stripe. John Jay out-rebounded York by a 58-55 margin and shot 45 percent to York's 38 percent but they lost the turnover battle. The Lady Cardinals converted turnovers into 35 points.
With the win, York improves to 5-6 on the season, while John Jay falls to 0-10. The Lady Cardinals will resume their conference schedule on Wednesday when they visit Medgar Evers College at 5:30 p.m.
NOTE: Although the Cardinals were playing a conference-opponent today, the game counts as a non-conference contest since it was played during a tournament and not the regular conference schedule.
