Brooklyn Rallies to Beat York in Five Sets

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see Brooklyn College rally to take the next three sets and the match.  The Bridges came out on a top in an extremely tight contest, winning 3-2 (26-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-26, 18-16) in a CUNYAC match-up Tuesday evening.

York looked to be on its way to a quick 3-0 win but things turned late in the third set.  With the scored tied at 27-27, Brooklyn scored the next two points to force set point.  York fought off one point but Brooklyn's Tommy Ma finished off the set with a kill.

Brooklyn then jumped out to a big lead in the fourth set and York could not recover.   The Bridges led 19-9 and slowly saw their lead shrunk to 29-26.  However an attack error by York would bring the match to a fifth and deciding set.

In the final set, York once again looked like they had the match after a  Brian Francisco kill gave York an 11-7 lead.  The Bridges then rattled off four straight points to tie the game at 11.

York did still have chance to win the match when they led 15-14, but once again Ma came through with a kill to tie the game at 15-15. After a service error by Brooklyn, York then missed out on another set point after a service error of its own.  Brooklyn then took the next two points, finishing off the match with another kill by Ma.

Despite the loss, York still clinches a home playoff game for the upcoming CUNYAC playoffs because Lehman College lost to CCNY, which guarantees the Cardinals the fourth seed. York's opponent is yet to be determined. The CUNYAC quarterfinals are set for March 24.

Ma put in a big effort for Brooklyn, recording 25 kills, 23 digs and 12 assists while David Mayerson finished with a match-high 41 assists.

York's Marcin Kasza also turned in a solid match, registering 16 kills, 15 assists, 13 digs and four blocks.  Alex Niles finished with 11 kills, nine digs and five blocks and Brian Francisco added ten kills, 11 digs and a match-high nine blocks.  Jean-Edouard Eveillard had 8 kills, 14 digs, four aces and five blocks.

York will return to action on Friday when they host the Fifth Annual York Invitational.  York will take on SUNYIT at 7:00 p.m.
