Box Score

BROOKLYN, NY – The York College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Brooklyn College Saturday, losing 77-75 in the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC/ Con Edison Women's Basketball Tournament.

With just 0:36 to play in the game, York found themselves down by two points, 75-73, when York freshman Kadisha Wickham, who turned in a huge effort, scoring 24 points on 10-14 shooting and grabbing ten boards, was fouled and sent to the line for two shots.  Wickham made the first, but missed the second to cut the lead to one point.

On the ensuing Brooklyn possession, York's Maimouna Dabo stripped the ball from Brooklyn's Joelle Laurenceau at half court and dished it to teammate Justina Boatwright, who attempted what would have been the go-ahead lay-up.  The ball bounced off the front rim and was knocked out of bounds with York retaining possession with only 13 seconds remaining.

After York in bounded the ball, Brooklyn's Priscilla Ramirez stole the ball from Dabo and was fouled with just three seconds remaining.  Ramirez missed the first and hit the second leaving York just three seconds to get the ball up court for a final shot.

York heaved the ball down court and sophomore Niya Jarvis came down with the ball.  However she did not have enough time to get a shot off and the game ended in heartbreaking fashion for York.

The Lady Cardinals looked strong in the first half as they took an eight point lead, 37-29, into the half.  York still held an eight point advantage, 44-36, with 17:17 to play but Brooklyn caught fire and quickly turned an eight point deficit into a seven-point advantage in just a four minute span, taking a 53-46 lead after a free throw shot by Amber Gordon with 13:23 left.

York slowly battled back, however, and retook the lead 72-70 after Boatwright connected on a three-pointer with 2:41 to play.  Brooklyn would net the next six points which set up the dramatic ending.

In addition to Wickham's strong effort, Boatwright aided York with 17 points and four boards, while Dabo finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Megan Davidson led Brooklyn with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Gordon and Ramirez each netted 15 points.

York ends its 2008-09 season with a record of 8-17.  Brooklyn (19-7) will advance to the semi-finals on Tuesday and will take on top-seeded Baruch College.
