BROOKLYN, NY— The York College men's basketball team closed out the 2008-09 regular season with a big statement win over conference-foe Brooklyn College, the first place team in the CUNY Athletic Conference South Division, by a score of 82-77 on Saturday afternoon. The win was the eighth straight for coach Ronald St. John's squad, and it put the Cardinals over .500 (13-12) for the first time this season.
With the win, York improves to 10-3 in conference play and clinches the third seed in the upcoming CUNYAC playoffs. York will host Hunter College in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
The win was also the 296th career victory for York head coach Ronald St. John. He is now just four wins away from a major coaching milestone.
Sophomore center Marcel Esonwune put up another big game for York, registering a double-double, scoring 24 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, blocking five shots and registering two steals. Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez also finished with 24 points and was 9-10 from the free throw line. Omari Phipps paced York with 14 points and six rebounds.
Although the five-point margin would indicate a close game, York dominated for the majority of the contest leading by as many as 17 points. Brooklyn cut into the lead late, making it a three point game, 73-70, with 4:15 to play. York, however, was able to hold off the late run and earn the victory.
For Brooklyn, Daniell Nisbit scored a team-high 23 points, while Richard Jean-Baptiste finished with 20 points and nine boards. Darnell Cudjoe paced the Bridges with nine points and 11 rebounds.
