Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to NJCU

, NY— The York College women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss to NJCU Saturday afternoon.   The Lady Cardinals erased an 18-point second half deficit, only to lose in the final seconds of the game by a score of 65-64. 

 

The Lady Cardinals found themselves in a 54-36 hole with 11:23 to play in the game.  York then scored 12 unanswered points to cut the lead to just six (54-48) with 7:25 to play. Kadisha Wickham had six points and Maimouna Dabo had four points during the run.   After NJCU scored the next four points to go back up by ten, York responded with another 12-0 run to take the lead with 3:52 to play.  It was Wickham again who came through, connecting on a jumper to put York up 60-58. 

 

With 9 seconds to play, the game was tied at 64-64.  York's Niya Jarvis was called for a questionable blocking foul and NJCU was sent to the line. NJCU's Latifah Johnson hit one free throw to put the Gothic Knights up 65-64.  On York's final possession, Dabo was able to get a good look off from three-point range but the shot hit off the rim at the buzzer.

 

Wickham turned in a monster game, scoring 24 points and grabbing a career-high 20 rebounds.  Jarvis chipped in with a double-double, scoring ten points, grabbing 11 boards and also swiping four steals.  Dabo also finished with 10 points for York who fell to 4-5. 

 

NJCU was led by Ebony Cunningham, who dominated from tip-off, scoring 35 points and grabbing 15 boards.  The Gothic Knights improve to 1-7 with the win.

 

York will be idle until January 3 when they play at the Catholic University tournament.
