Box Score

BRONX, NY— The York College women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end on Sunday with a, 72-48, loss to Lehman College in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) quarterfinals.  Despite the loss, the Lady Cardinals season will be seen as a successful one.  York (8-17) qualified for the playoffs and finished with six more wins than they did a year ago.

The Lady Cardinals played tough in the early going and trailed just 8-6 after two Niya Jarvis (Bronx, NY/ Talent Unlimited) free throws at the 14:33 mark.   However a 12-0 run followed and York found themselves in a 20-6 hole with 11:50 left in the first half.   York responded back with five unanswered points to cut it to a nine-point advantage.  Once again , however, Lehman followed with a big run, this time scoring 11 straight to take a 31-11 lead.  Lehman (16-10) continued to extend their lead and led 41-16 at halftime.   The Lightning’s Whitney Barnes had 13 first-half points, including shooting 7-7 from the charity stripe.

In the second half, Lehman maintained their big advantage.  A three pointer by Sally Nnamani gave the Lighting a 59-27 lead with 10:00 to play.  However the Cardinals play was much improved in the second half.  A lay-up by Jarvis at the 3:30 mark cut Lehman’s lead to 63-42.  In fact York outscored the Lightning 32-31 in the second half.

Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) scored a team-high 12 points to lead York. Chiquita Greene (Brooklyn, NY/ Harry Van Arsdale) finished with a double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing ten boards.  Jarvis finished with seven points and 11 rebounds and Shayna Smith (Brooklyn, NY/ August Martin) added eight points and five boards.

For Lehman, Barnes and Nnamani each had a game-high 15 points, while Kimberly Kelly added 14 points.

The Lightning now advance to the CUNYAC semi-finals on Wednesday where they will face the College of Staten Island.
