Jamal Wilkerson

Jamal Wilkerson has been named York College men’s and women’s head track & field coach, and assistant cross country coach.

“It is a pleasure to be named head coach of York College men's and women's track & field team.  This program has a rich tradition in not only cranking out great scholar-athletes, but great members of society at large. I plan to help restore this program back to its former glory and lead this team to not only a conference title, but to compete on a national level."

Wilkerson was raised in the Laurelton and Cambria Heights section of Queens, and attended Andrew Jackson High School. As a prep star, Wilkerson competed for both Andrew Jackson and Metro Eagles TC, where he gained All-American status and was nationally ranked in the 600- and 800-meter events.  Wilkerson studied history at Bethune Cookman college while being there on full athletic scholarship.

No stranger to Queens, Wilkerson also attended York college to study paralegal studies.  From 2001-05, Wilkerson served as assistant coach for men’s and women’s cross country and track & field under legendary coach, Thomas Pope.  During Wilkerson’s coaching tenure at York, the Cardinals captured a total of five CUNYAC Championships between women’s cross country (2002), men’s indoor track & field (2005), men’s outdoor track & field (2002, 2005) and women’s outdoor track & field (2002). His coaching resume includes the development of over a dozen All-American athletes at the college and club levels.

Wilkerson competed professionally from 2002-06 for Metro Elite TC, and trained for the 2004 Olympics in the 800-meter event. From 2006-13, Wilkerson served as assistant coach for the Metro Eagles TC, winning championships at the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) level.
