www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball opened its season with a bang Thursday evening, winning in straight sets (25-7, 25-14, 25-18) over the Medgar Evers College Cougars (0-5). This is the first time since 2019 that York women's volleyball has won its opening contest.
First Set Breakdown
- A pair of kills by Zia Lefebvre capped off a 12-1 start.
- The Cougars claimed four of the next five points to trim the deficit to eight (13-5).
- York responded with a 9-0 spurt, as freshman Sonia Correa served five aces in the sequence.
- An ace from Joeriza Moreno finalized a 25-7 scoreline.
Second Set Breakdown
- A pair of aces from Simranjit Kaur got the Cardinals up 5-1.
- Raine Williams' ace punctuated a 5-0 Cougar spark to give them a 6-5 edge.
- Level at 10, York countered with an 8-0 surge to take control (18-10). The Cardinals recorded five kills during the run.
- Medgar Evers claimed the following three points (18-13), but that was the closest the margin got the rest of the stanza.
- The Cardinals closed out the set on a 7-1 pace, as Widmaelle Drouillard's ace made it 25-14.
Third Set Breakdown
- Five consecutive aces from Kaur helped York lead 6-0.
- Ahead by three (8-5), the Cardinals went on another scoring spree, as three Correa aces and two smackdowns from MaliaJewel Bembry-Morris pushed the advantage to nine (14-5).
- Roaring back, the Cougars utilized a 10-2 spurt to trim the deficit to one (16-15).
- York settled down as another two Kaur aces extended the edge to four (19-15).
- Not going away, two kills by Moutiatou Djibring made it a two-point affair (19-17).
- The Cardinals closed on a 6-1 sprint, with Bembry-Morris delivering the match-sealing kill.
Leading the Cardinals
- Correa produced a match-high 13 points (nine aces and four kills) and set her teammates up a match-best eight times.
- Bembry-Morris smacked down a match-leading eight kills on an efficient .545 rate.
- Kaur served a career-best 10 aces, tallied six assists, and contributed three digs.
- Lefebvre stuffed the stat sheet with seven kills, three assists, two aces, and a match-best 12 digs.
- Drouillard added four aces and two kills.
- Shaday Torres delivered three kills and scooped up six digs.
- Moreno also got in on the serving action with three aces.
For Medgar Evers
- Djibring powered home a team-leading five kills and added two aces.
- Williams served a team-best three aces and helped defensively with three digs.
- Shanya Aitcheson (6) and Danajah Lawrence (4) also provided a defensive boost with 10 combined digs.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals produced 63 total attacks, recording 26 kills and a .190 attack percentage. Medgar Evers generated 44 attacks, totaling nine kills at an even .000 rate. Additionally, the Cardinals maintained an advantage in points (56-15), aces (29-6), blocks (1-0), assists (22-6), and digs (24-15).
