Emmett Howell brings leadership, legacy, and local pride to York College Women’s Basketball

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College has named Emmett Howell as the new head women's basketball coach, Director of Athletics Carl Christian announced today.  A native of Queens and a former York College attendee, Howell brings more than two decades of coaching experience, leadership, and community impact to the role, with a focus on developing student-athletes on and off the court.

"This means the world to me — to be given a chance to cultivate a program that has great ties to the community. We, as a coaching staff, are elated for this opportunity," said Howell.

"We are excited to welcome Emmett Howell back to York College as the new head coach of our women's basketball program. Coach Howell brings unmatched passion, experience, and a deep-rooted connection to the Cardinals community. He understands the legacy of the program and is committed to its success, and we're confident that he's the right leader to restore it to prominence and build something truly special for the future," said Christian.

Howell served as assistant men's basketball coach at Queensborough Community College from 2013-25, working alongside and under current York Head Men's Basketball Coach Clarence Emengo for nine seasons during his time with the Tigers. Throughout his tenure, Howell played an integral role in player development, game preparation, and recruiting. Under their combined leadership, the program made nine CUNYAC postseason appearances and produced two All-America selections, culminating in a CUNYAC Men's Basketball Championship in 2022–23.

"My philosophy is to give 110%, leave it all on the floor, and trust that everything else will work itself out. We will be looking for high-character student-athletes who are ready to work hard and learn the game," said Howell.

In 2010, Howell founded Learn The Game, a Queens-based basketball development program that has served as a training ground for athletes across youth, high school, and college levels. As CEO and Head Trainer, Howell oversees everything from skill development and team coaching to scheduling and operations. Howell has also served as the head basketball coordinator for Bello Youth Sports since 2012, coaching multiple age groups and helping build one of the borough's most respected grassroots basketball pipelines.

From 2016-18, Howell led the New York Knights Semi-Pro Basketball Team as head coach, managing both player development and team operations. Earlier in his career, Howell held coaching and teaching roles at the Lowell School and served as basketball coordinator at Roy Wilkins Community Center, where he worked with young athletes ages 6 to 15.

Howell, who earned his bachelor's degree in Education from Adelphi University in 1993, is widely respected for his motivational leadership style, strategic mindset, and deep commitment to mentoring young athletes. Known for fostering team-first environments and individual accountability, Howell is passionate about using basketball as a vehicle to help students grow as leaders, teammates, and future graduates.

Earlier in his career, Howell also worked for Verizon in New York City, where he retired in 2023 after more than 25 years as a Field Technician and Manager.

Howell currently resides in the Laurelton section of Queens. He is a father of two, as his son is a teacher and daughter is an architect.
