JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball needed five sets (23-25-, 25-27, 25-21, 27-25, 15-7) to claim victory Saturday over the visiting Bryn Athyn College Lions (6-8) in a non-conference tri-match inside York College Gymnasium.  The win improves York to 3-0 in five set matches dating back to the 2020 season.  York opened the day with a setback in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-16) against the Purchase College Panthers (4-4).
 
Match 1: Purchase 3, York 0 (25-21, 25-20 , 25-16)

First Set Breakdown

• Channing Williams' ace got Purchase off to a 7-4 start.
• A service ace from Iteoluwakiisi Adegboye leveled the score at seven.
• Both squads traded mini spurts, with Sebastian Gomez's smackdown for York shrinking the Panthers' lead to one (14-13).
• Williams' kill gave Purchase a set-high four-point edge (17-13).
• Going back and forth, each side never claimed consecutive points the rest of the way, as the Panthers won the stanza 25-21.

Second Set Breakdown

• Kills by Gomez, David Heyliger, Jr., and Alexis Ramirez helped York to a 6-6 opening.
• Five combined smackdowns from both schools pushed the score to 12-12.
• Taking control, the Panthers utilized a 5-1 spurt to take a four-point advantage (17-13).
• The Cardinals trimmed the deficit to two (20-18) following Heyliger, Jr.'s kill.
• Purchase never relinquished the lead, as a York attack error sealed a 25-20 scoreline. 

Third Set Breakdown

• Buoyed by Williams and Tyler Ryan's six combined points, the Panthers raced out to an 11-2 edge.
• Purchase made it a double-digit margin (14-4) following another Ryan smackdown. 
• Trailing 19-8, a 5-1 spurt from the Cardinals got them within seven (20-13) before the Panthers strolled to a 25-16 triumph. 

Leading the Cardinals 

• Gomez nailed down 15 kills on 26 swings to attack at a .500 clip on his way to a team-best 15 points.
• Ramirez followed with 10 kills (.207%) while Heyliger, Jr. went for nine kills, one block, and a team-leading four digs.  
• Stanley Sanchez directed the Cardinal offense with 34 assists.
• Adegboye and Ian McIntosh each serve one ace.  

For Purchase

• Ryan produced a match-high 16 points on 13 kills (.385%), two blocks, and one ace while scooping five digs.
• Williams contributed 12 kills (400%) and two block assists.
• Victor Ruiz and Ayden Mercado ran the offensive attack by handing out 20 and 17 assists, respectively.  Ruiz also served two aces.
• Tony Acosta recorded a match-leading nine digs.

Inside the Box Score
A competitive affair, Purchase held advantages in points (51-40), kills (42-36), aces (3-2), assists (41-35), and total blocks (9-2). At the net, the Panthers struck 74 times at a .405 clip, while York generated 91 swings at a .198 rate.

Match 2: York 3, Bryn Athyn 2  (23-25-25-27, 25-21, 27-25, 15-7)

First Set Breakdown

• Adegboye's kill to even the score at six was the sixth tie of the frame. 
• Knotted at 11, Bryn Athyn went on a mini 3-0 run to take a set-high three-point edge (14-11).
• The Cardinals responded with a 6-1 blitz to go ahead 17-15.
• The next 11 points featured five ties and three lead changes, with the Lions clinging to a one-point margin (22-21).
• A pair of Ramirez smackdowns put York up 23-22.
• Bryn Athyn played perfect ball the final three points, as kills from Miles Shepard and Bryan Choute sealed a 25-23 result.

Second Set Breakdown

• A kill by Doston Dosmatov gave the Lions a 4-2 advantage.
• Points by Adegobye, Gomez, and Ramirez gave the Cardinals a 9-8 lead.
• Capped off by Shepard's kill, Bryn Athyn surged ahead 16-12
• Responding well, a trio of Ramirez aces sparked a 7-0 blitz for York, turning the scoreline to 19-16.
• Trailing by four (22-18), the Lions staved off two set points and closed out a 27-25 count following a 9-3 burst. 

Third Set Breakdown

• Bryn Athyn's 5-0 run got the set moving at 8-5. 
• Trading mini runs, a Gomez kill evened the score at 15.  
• Taking control, Gomez authored four kills in a five-point stretch to give the Cardinals a four-point edge (21-17).
• Ramirez punctuated a 25-21 stanza with a kill.

Fourth Set Breakdown

• York continued its momentum with an 8-2 start.
• A trio of Shepard kills turned that six-point deficit into a 10-10 ballgame.
• McIntosh's kill tied the period at 16.
• Owen Reuter's ace at 19-16 looked like a turning point for the Lions before a trio of Gomez aces punctuated a 7-2 charge to give York a 23-21 advantage.
• Bryn Athyn equaled the score twice late on, but swats by Gomez and Adegboye finalized a 27-25 scoreline. 

Five Set Breakdown

• With the score at 4-4, a pair of kills by Heyliger, Jr. facilitated a 4-0 burst for York to take control 8-4.
• The Cardinals never relinquished the lead, as Heyliger, Jr. and Adegboye combined for the match-winning block.

Leading the Cardinals 

• Gomez starred with a game-high 24 kills (.271 %) to go along with nine digs.
• Ramirez continued his strong day with 19 kills, and team-bests in digs (12) and aces (6). 
• Heyliger, Jr. recorded 10 attacks and four total blocks. 
• Adegboye notched a career-high 10 points.
• Ahmed Algendy offered defensive support with 11 digs, and Sanchez generated a career-best 55 assists. 

For Bryn Athyn

• Shepard totaled a team-leading 21 kills (.241 %) and 10 digs.
• Choute provided 18 kills at a .244 rate and a team-leading two aces. 
• Owen Reuter tallied seven kills and three solo blocks. 
• Dosmatov (23) and Laban Genzlinger (25) combined for 48 assists.
• Adan Rodriguez-Sapien scooped up a team-best 21 digs. 

Inside the Box Score
York had the upper hand in points (85-70), kills (60-54), total attacks (146-138), assists (58-51), aces (14-6), total blocks (5-13), and digs (50-38). On the attack, the Cardinals swung at a .199 clip, while Bryn Athyn registered a .196 percentage.
