@yorkcardinals Men's Basketball showcases balanced scoring at St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

York College returns home Wednesday (Dec. 3) for a non-conference bout with Manhattanville University

PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball closed out a mini two-game road trip Saturday afternoon with a non-conference setback against the St. Joseph's University Golden Eagles (1-4), falling by a final of 77-52 inside the Danzi Athletic Center.

How it Happened
  • Falling behind 5–0, York rallied with an 8–4 charge as Christopher Smith and Jonte Wallace each scored four to pull the Cardinals within one, 9–8, at the 14:54 mark. 
  • Within striking distance, Smith sank a pair of free throws to trim the deficit to five (25–20) before St. Joseph's closed the half on a 17–4 run over the final 5:55. 
  • After being outscored by 18 points in the opening stanza, York scored six of the next eight points as Jonte Wallace netted four to make it a 44–30 game 3:52 into the half, briefly shifting the momentum in the Cardinals' favor. 
  • Moments later, four different Cardinals contributed to a 7–3 spurt over a 2:15 stretch in which York's defense limited the Golden Eagles to just a pair of shot attempts from the floor.
  • The run was capped by a Malakai Clark layup with 11:52 left that got York as close as 11 at 50-39. 
  • St. Joseph's responded with a 27–6 scoring spree from 10:27 to 2:50, fueled by Kenny Rodriguez and Jaiden Gaston combining for 19 points.
  • The surge gave the Golden Eagles a game-high 32-point lead, 77–45.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Wallace led York with 10 points (5-of-10 FG), seven rebounds, and a steal.
  • Clark added 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Smith contributed eight points and six rebounds.
  • Oke Okrokoto pulled down nine rebounds and added a block and a steal.
  • Joshua Jackman grabbed eight rebounds, including three on the offensive glass.
  • Benjamin Grant chipped in six points off the bench and recorded two steals.
For St. Joseph's
  • Kenny Rodriguez led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 18 points (6-of-12 FG, 3-of-3 3FG), 13 rebounds, and four assists.
  • TayShaun Hawkins added 16 points, six assists, and six rebounds. 
  • Gaston, AJ Esposito, and Matthew Maxwell rounded out the Golden Eagles' double-digit scorers with 13, 11, and 10 points, respectively.
Inside the Box Score
York connected on 32.4 percent (22-of-68) from the field and made eight free throws. By comparison, St. Joseph's shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66), including 10 triples, and drained 13 free throws.  The Cardinals won the battle of the boards, 47–44, converting 15 second-chance points off 17 offensive rebounds. York also controlled the paint with a 32-26 edge. and their bench outscored St. Joseph's reserves, 26–12. Both teams recorded six steals and one block while the Golden Eagles held the advantage in assists (20–6).
