NEW YORK --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College freshman
Alexander Cruz was named the CUNYAC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week on Monday for matches played from September 29 to October 5. With this recognition, a Cardinal has now earned Rookie of the Week honors for the third consecutive week. Cruz also becomes the first York goalkeeper to receive a CUNYAC weekly award since
Ahmed Algendy in 2021.
Cruz made his debut on October 1, when he was called into goalkeeping action against Lehman College. He delivered an impressive performance, making seven saves in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Just three days later, he notched his first career shutout, stopping five shots in a 1-0 victory over Medgar Evers College.
Through 180 minutes of action this season, the freshman boasts an elite 0.50 goals-against average (GAA) and a .923 save percentage. He is one of only six goalkeepers in the CUNYAC to record a shutout this season.
Up Next for Cruz and the Cardinals
The Cardinals continue their CUNYAC slate Wednesday (Oct. 8) with a home battle against the Baruch College Bearcats (1-3-4, 0-0-2 CUNYAC) starting at 3 p.m. from York College Outdoor Athletic Complex.
