Brandon Barrett continued his strong season, taking home the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week distinction for games played January 6-12. Barrett has won three CUNYAC Weekly Rookie of the Week honors, making it the fourth time in six seasons that the program has produced a student-athlete who took home at least three CUNYAC Rookie of the Week awards.
In two conference battles last week, Barrett averaged 21.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 3.0 blocks on a solid 53.3 percent (16-of-30) shooting from the field. Hosting the John Jay College Bloodhounds (Jan. 8), Barrett recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and a career-best 10 assists. Barrett's gravity inside spearheaded a season-high 93-point outing in a tough overtime loss. Losing a 92-91 heartbreaker at Medgar Evers College (Jan. 10), Barrett dropped 21 points (8-of-16 FG, 5-of-6 FT), collected 12 rebounds, and swatted away a game-leading four shots.
Over 12 contests this season, the Queens native is level with
Aidony Nivar for the team lead in scoring (14.5 points per game) and paces the squad in rebounds (10.8) and blocks (1.8) per game. Per the CUNYAC leaderboard, the rookie tops the conference in rebounds, is second in blocks, third in field goal percentage (.526), and is tied for 11th in points per game. On a national scale, he places highly in rebounds per game (16th), double-doubles (6, T-25), and blocks per game (T-55th).
