@yorkcardinals’ Sanchez marked CUNYAC Men’s Soccer Preseason Player to Watch

York College was selected to finish seventh in the 2024 CUNYAC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll

FLUSHING, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College junior midfielder Stanley Sanchez was recognized Tuesady as a 2024 CUNYAC Men's Soccer Preseason Player to Watch as league officials released the eight-member squad. This is the second consecutive year that Sanchez has been chosen as York's representative on the Men's Soccer Preseason Player to Watch list. 

Sanchez, a 2022 CUNYAC Second-Team All-Star, played in 21 matches during the last two seasons at York, totaling three goals and two assists. In the 2022 season, he paced the Cardinals with two assists and 12 shots on goal, ranking second on the team in points (8), goals (3), and shots (21), and third in minutes played (1097). Academically, Sanchez is a four-time CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selection.

Voted on by the league coaches, York was picked to finish seventh in the CUNYAC Preseason Poll.

Coaches peg Lehman College as the league winner, as the Lightning received 45 points and four first-place nods, while the Cardinals received 11 total points. York's seven-match conference slate kicks off at Baruch College on October 2. 

The 2024 CUNYAC Championship will take place October 30 (first round), November 2 (semifinals), and November 9 (finals), with the league champion receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.

York finished last season with a 1-11-2, with the team's lone victory coming in a 2-1 road comeback against Medgar Evers College. In addition to Sanchez, York returns 2021 CUNYAC All-Star goalie Ahmed Algendy, and midfield contributors Luis Delgadillo, Jamar Johnson, and Altenor Molien. Under the guidance of second-year head coach Brahim Chhab, the roster currently features 10 familiar faces combined with six newcomers as the Cardinals will look to return to postseason play for the first time since 2013.

The Cardinals open their season Wednesday (Sept. 4) at home against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights at 3 p.m. in the first-ever match played at York College Outdoor Athletic Complex.
