@yorkcardinals Softball challenges Lehman in season finale

York College increased its wins total by three games compared to the 2023 season

BRONX, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball concluded their 2024 campaign Tuesday evening with a non-conference doubleheader against the Lehman College Lightning (9-20-1) from South Field.  The Cardinals (4-20) were unable to keep pace with Lehman, falling 23-0 and 17-1 in their season finale.

Game 1: Lehman 23, York 0  (5 Inn.)
  • Helped by an RBI triple by Kaycee Isley (1-for-4, R, RBI, BB), a run scoring single from Jireh Espina (4-for-5, 3 R, 3 RBI), and four stolen bases the Lightning scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning off Cardinal starter Ayana Saavedra (L, 2-6: 5 IP, 22 H, 23 ER, 5 BB, SO)
  • Patria Sanchez (3-for-5, 2 R, RBI) went yard in the second frame to extend Lehman's edge to 7-0.
  • Executing a hitting barrage, Lehman utilized nine hits and five stolen bases to tack on 11 runs to the scoreline in the top of the third inning. Lizbeth Perez (4-for-4, 5 R, 7 RBI, BB, 5 SB) smacked a grand slam to left field that put the scoring margin at 18.
  • Andrea Wright (1-for-2) got the Cardinals off the mark in the hit column in the bottom of the third off Lightning hurler Jireh Espina (W, 8-17: 5 IP, 2 H, BB, 6 SO).
  • Perez put a feather on her display in the top of the fourth, generating a two-RBI triple and stealing home to cap off the offensive display at 23-0.
  • Fast forwarding to the home half of the fifth inning, following a rocket of a single by Jasmin Rodriguez, she got caught stealing second to end the game.
  • Beyond the final score, the Lightning had the edge in hits (22-2), extra-base hits (6-0), walks (5-1), and stolen bases (11-0). A relatively clean game in the field, York committed one error as opposed to Lehman's zero.
Game 2: Lehman 17, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • The Lightning struck first with a four-pack of runs in the opening frame.  Perez (3-for-3, 4 R, 3 RBI, BB, 6 SB) singled, stole second and third before advancing home on a sacrifice hit to break the scoring ice.  A throwing error doubled Lehman's advantage prior to back-to-back RBI singles made it a 4-0 game on York starter Remedios Garcia (L, 2-11: 5 IP, 12 H, 11 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO).
  • York answered by scoring its lone run of the game in the home half of the first.  Alicia Gumbs worked a leadoff walk and stole second.  Michelle Mancuso then pushed Gumbs to third with a single off Lehman's Espina (W, 9-17: 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 7 SO).  Garcia then helped her own cause by driving in Gumbs on a shot that was misplayed by left fielder Ilena Calle.
  • Lehman extended its lead to put the game out of reach with four runs in the second and third innings to go up, 12-1.
  • The Cardinals threatened in the third inning as a pair of wild pitches posted Gumbs on third.  Mancuso then worked a walk before Garcia popped out to strand runners at the corners.
  • York did not go down easy, as the Cardinals fought in the fifth.  Saavedra singled and moved to second on an error. Espina settled down and fanned the next two batters to strand Saavedra on third.
  • In the end, Lehman outhit York 12-2, while stranding four runners compared to the Cardinals' two.  Defensively, York made four errors as Lehman committed one. On the basepath, Lehman stole 12 bags and York had one.
The Cardinals graduate a senior class of four and will look to build on the 2024 progress under head coach Tracey Marshall.
