@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball concludes season at Valley Forge

York College increased its total wins from a season ago under second-year head coach Anthony Reyes

PHOENIXVILLE, PA --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball wrapped up their campaign Saturday afternoon with a non-conference road doubleheader against the University of Valley Forge Patriots (13-11) inside UVF Gymnasium.  The Patriots took the opening match in straight sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-15) before York (3-18) pushed Valley Forge to four (25-19, 15-25, 25-8, 25-12).

After back-to-back winless campaigns in 2022 and 2023, the 2024 Cardinals manufactured three wins under second-year head coach Anthony Reyes,.  David Heyliger, Jr. showed out in his final season with th Cardinals to finish with 308 points, York's highest total since 2015, when Randy Adams (342) and Edner Geffrard (332.5) both dropped 300+.  York graduates a four-member senior class consisting of Heyliger, Jr., along with classmates Austinson Cooke, Marvin Mondesir and Glenver Stuart

Match 1: Valley Forge 3, York 0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-15)
First Set Breakdown
  • Both teams came out swinging in the opening set as York hit .500 compared to Valley Forge's .800.
  • Trailing 4-1, York utilized a 5-1 burst to take its only lead of the stanza (6-5).
  • York served four of its five aces in the opening stanza with back-to-back lasers by David Heyliger, Jr. to level the score at four, capped off by George Molina's ace to put York up (6-5)
  • Aces by Paul Brown and Nathan Whisman helped Valley Forge go up 9-6.
  • Leading 10-9, seven service aces sparked an 8-1 scoring spree for the Patriots, giving them an 18-10 advantage.
  • The Cardinals could not mount a comeback, as Brown's ace sealed a 25-13 set victory. 
Second Set Breakdown
  • A pair of kills by York's David Heyliger Jr. helped the Cardinals remain in the stanza at the beginning, trailing 7-6.
  • Valley Forge went on a quick 4-0 spurt to lead by five (11-6).
  • Coming back, the Cardinals trimmed the deficit to one (15-14) after Heyliger, Jr. compiled one of his five smackdowns in the set.
  • Regaining control, the Patriots pushed their advantage to eight (22-14) following a 7-0 blitz.
  • Tyler Younger's kill closed out a 25-16 win for Valley Forge.
Third Set Breakdown
  • Valley Forge raced out to a 10-4 lead buoyed by three aces from Younger.
  • York closed the deficit to two (10-8) after claiming three points on Ahmed Algendy's serve.
  • Running away with the period, the Patriots utilized a 11-2 scoring spree to take an 11-point edge (21-10), before Clay Confer's kill clinched a 25-15 scoreline.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. recorded eight kills, three aces and a block assist to pace the Cardinals with 11.5 points. 
  • Stanley Sanchez moved York's offense with nine assists.
  • Algendy chipped in two kills and served one ace.  
For Valley Forge
  • Younger paced the team with nine points (six kills, two aces, one solo block).
  • Confer added a match-best eight kills with a .889 swing rate.
  • Toby Harris contributed a team-high five aces.
  • Whisman tallied a team-best 12 total attacks and Joel Cordero orchestrated the Patriot offense with 13 assists.

York finished with a -.070 attack percentage while the Patriots hit .341. Additionally, Valley Forge controlled the battle in points (75-44), kills (22-12), aces (11-5), assists (20-11) and digs (14-9). 

Match 2: Valley Forge 3, York 1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-8, 25-12)
First Set Breakdown
  • Kills by Heyliger, Jr. and Algendy helped York get off to a 2-1 start.
  • Valley Forge went ahead 6-3 after kills by Brown and Isaiah Reece.
  • A back-and-forth set, the Patriots took their first six-point lead (16-10) following another kill by Reece.
  • Hoping to put a dent into the deficit, the Cardinals made it a four-point contest on three different occasions (17-13), (18-14), (20-16).
  • Pulling away, two smackdowns by Cordero sealed the 25-19 margin.
Second Set Breakdown
  • A pair of kills by Heyliger, Jr. gave York an early 3-1 lead.
  • Stringing momentum together, the Cardinals used two 3-0 runs to take a 12-7 advantage.
  • Ahead 13-10, York took its first double-digit lead (22-12) of the match, as a 9-2 burst had them firmly in control of the period.
  • A kill by Sanchez helped close out a 25-15 triumph.
Third Set Breakdown
  • After Heyliger, Jr.'s kill put York up 1-0, Valley Forge countered with a prolonged 15-1 eruption, finished off with four aces by Younger.
  • The Patriots controlled the entire stanza, as consecutive kills by Whisman wrapped up a 25-8 scoreline.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • Valley Forge began the period up 7-1.
  • Growing into the play, kills by Molina and Sanchez made it an 8-5 scoreline for York.
  • Leading 10-7, the Patriots went on a 4-0 spurt to extend the score to 14-7.
  • The closest the Cardinals got was six (16-10), as Valley Forge cruised on 9-2 run to win the match.  
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. had a team-leading nine kills on 21 attacks, swinging at a stout .286 rate.
  • Algendy tallied a team-best 10 digs.
  • Sanchez recorded nine assists.
  • Austinson Cooke swatted two shots and Glenver Stuart produced a kill and an assist.
For Valley Forge
  • Younger led the squad with 11 points (five kills and six aces) to go along with a team-best seven digs.
  • Harris added four kills and six aces.
  • Whisman produced five kills, three aces, and three assists.
  • Confer chipped in with four kills and four aces.
  • Reece and Brown both smacked down four kills, with Brown managing a match-high 10 assists.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals hit .022 on 46 swings while Valley Forge attacked at a .195 rate on 77 attempts. Beyond the scoreline, the Patriots owned the edge in points (51-18), kills (30-11), aces (20-3), assists (25-10), as York outplayed Valley Forge in digs (24-20).
